One of the most crucial compliance under this law is FSSAI License Registration. All the food business owners need to obtain this license and they cannot work without this license. Food License V/S FSSAI License

There are a lot of people who are confused between a food license and FSSAI license. Thus before learning about the validity period of a registered food license, we will know about the Food License v/s FSSAI License.  The very first thing you should know is that both these foods as well as FSSAI License are the same. The formal name of the Food License is FSSAI License. They can be used interchangeably. There is nothing like the difference between a food license and FSSAI License. Hence you don’t need to confuse them.

What Do You Mean By FSSAI License Registration?

Registration of the food license can be done by submitting an online application for the same. This application will be verified before providing you the license. After this verification of the application is done by the competent authorities and if everything is as per the law they will issue a license for your business that is known as FSSAI or Food License. This entire process of getting this food license is known as FSSAI License Registration.

Without following this process one cannot obtain this license for your food business and without a license it’s very risky to do the food business in the Indian market. You can also take help of an expert while doing this registration, who can guide you regarding both the registration process as well as the validity period of a registered food or FSSAI license.

Types of Food License

There are three primary categories of food firms in the food sector.

  • Those who operate small food businesses, such as food stands, thela balas, pani puri thales, etc., come first. There will be general food registration applicable to these types of companies.
  • Mid-sized food businesses make up the second category; they have a relatively low turnover, but it will still be more than or equal to twelve lakhs and such businesses are subject to a State FSSAI License application.
  • Third group of food enterprises are those which are substantial sized businesses like hotels, restaurants, canteens, etc with more than twelve lakhs of yearly sales. In such types of food enterprises the Central FSSAI License will be applicable.

Validity Period of a Registered Food License in India

As mentioned above, this FSSAI or Food license is not something which is a one time thing. Food business owners need to obtain this and after the expiry of the validity period of a registered food license, they need to renew the same within the stipulated time duration. Non compliance with the same can lead to cancellation of your registration after which you need to do registration again which is a hectic process. Also once a license has been canceled, it becomes a little difficult to get this license again. Hence you must be aware about the expiry of the validity period of a registered food license, so that you can renew the same on time.

Expiry Period of Food License

FSSAI License can be given minimum for the duration of one year and maximum for the duration of five years, after which one needs to renew the same. It’s up to the applicant for how much time duration he or she wants to take this registration. According to the duration of the time fees will vary. For one year the fees are less and for more than one year the fees will be more.  In short it can be said that the validity period of a registered food license can fall between 1-5 years as the registration has been taken by the applicant.

Example of Food License Validity

Lets understand the concept of the validity period of a registered food license with the help of an example. Ram has a food business in Delhi and he obtained the food license for three years and his brother who is also having a catering food business who has obtained the same license for five years. Here the expiry of the validity period of a registered food license for both of them will be different. For Ram the validity period will be three years and for his brother the validity period will be five years. This is how the concept of the validity period of a registered food or FSSAI license works.

What to do After the Expiry of the Validity Period of the Food License?
